Telcoin recently announced on X that it would be returning to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month. Previously, the blockchain-based fintech firm had attended the event for business development and marketing purposes, but their latest announcement confirmed that the company would be an event exhibitor with a booth at the conference’s 4YFN area for emerging tech startups. Is this the year that Telcoin makes a major announcement?
Telcoin, founded in 2017, has been one of the blockchain companies most closely associated with the telecommunications industry. It was the first crypto firm to become a GSM Association (GSMA) Associate Member in 2018, which connected them to the industry’s largest working group. Members of the Telcoin team have attended previous MWC events in Europe, Africa, and North America.
Last year, Telcoin CCO Rajesh Sabari spoke on panels with major industry players from Citi, Celo, Deloitte, and Vatom. This year he is back with another group of heavyweights from JP Morgan, Banco Santander, and Mento Labs for a panel titled “The Transformative Path with Blockchain.”
Given the more direct participation in this year’s conference, could Telcoin be on the cusp of a major new development? If we consider past Telcoin updates and social media posts, here are a few of the possibilities:
1. Telcoin Network development?
The Telcoin Network website recently updated its roadmap to show that it has moved to the Beta Testnet phase. It still shows Alpha Mainnet slated for Q2, but perhaps there will be some kind of announcement related to progress on the company’s public blockchain designed for the telecommunications industry.
2. First mobile network partner?
Going along with the first possibility above, perhaps Telcoin will finally name a mobile network partner that will become a validator on the Telcoin Network. Telcoin’s blockchain will be exclusively validated by GSMA mobile network operators, so what better place to meet with and potentially announce a telecom partnership than MWC?
3. Launch of stablecoin remittance service?
Telcoin’s most recent community update from September 2023 stated: “Seamless stablecoin rails on both sides of these prominent remittance corridors has been our focus for some time, and we are finally seeing this come into view.” Remittances have always been Telcoin’s most important feature, despite venturing into DeFi trading since the 2021. Maybe the company is ready to tell us more about how it will redefine global money transfers using stablecoins and the upcoming Telcoin Network.
4. Telcoin Bank?
Telcoin made major waves in 2021 when it was involved in the passing of a law in Nebraska in the United States related to digital asset banking. The company has previously stated its intention to become a regulated bank issuer of stablecoins alongside the passage of this groundbreaking legislation. Also in the last Telcoin Community update was mention of the hiring of a Nebraska Banking Operations role.
