Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping industries, but with this rapid growth comes a significant challenge — transparency and trust. AI models often operate as black boxes, leaving users and stakeholders unsure of how decisions are made. This lack of transparency creates compliance and security issues, especially as AI adoption expands across various sectors.
Enter Immutable Labs, a company that is tackling this very issue head-on. By combining cutting-edge cryptographic techniques with a Proof of Useful Work (PoUW) consensus, Immutable Labs aims to bring transparency, efficiency, and trust to the AI ecosystem. In this interview, we dive deep into how Immutable is solving these pressing problems.
- Can you give us a quick rundown of what Immutable Labs is all about and the problems you’re solving with AI?
Certainly, thank you for the question. Artificial Intelligence has created a crisis of opportunity to meet unprecedented levels of demand for hardware resources. Traditional businesses are resorting to unconventional means to acquire GPUs, CPUs, ASICs, PSUs and other components. Such drastic transformation is the unique opportunity the decentralization landscape has been waiting for to attract significant external investment, potentially bringing hundreds of billions of dollars into our ecosystem.
Over the past year and a half, we have dedicated ourselves to studying the foundational works of pioneers like Hal Finney and Nick Szabo, whose ideas preceded Satoshi Nakamoto’s Bitcoin. Inspired by Hal’s vision for Proof of Work (PoW) in the future, we have developed a new consensus mechanism called Green Proof of Work (GPOW). GPOW, the most efficient Proof of Useful Work (PoUW) consensus to date, enables us to integrate entire servers into our network, forming an on-chain computing and data infrastructure.
Think of it as similar to EigenLayer but utilizing cutting-edge cryptographic techniques and advanced consensus algorithms, which enhance the security and efficiency of the network. Our consensus mechanism allows us to track data on-chain much like how Bitcoin tracks transactions, making it ideally suited for AI applications. This approach frees up approximately 200-300% more GPU power compared to solutions like Bittensor, enabling us to reward the community more generously with less token inflation and allowing us to undertake a broader range of computational tasks. Ultimately, our goal is to make AI transparent, which is crucial for compliance and building trust.
- What’s unique about your approach to making AI models more transparent and compliant?
Our approach is unique in that we have built upon Hal Finney’s vision for Proof of Work in the future, enabling us to track on-chain computing and data in the same way Satoshi’s Bitcoin tracks transactions. Hal Finney’s work on concepts like “Proof of Work World” and “Reusable Proof of Work” laid the groundwork for this idea. By leveraging modern cryptographic techniques that were not available during Hal’s time, and incorporating advanced security frameworks, we have finally developed a highly efficient Proof of Useful Work consensus mechanism. This allows us to use the least amount of resources possible when making AI models more transparent and compliant by ensuring that all computational tasks and data manipulations are recorded and verifiable on the blockchain.
- How does your Green Proof of Work (GPOW) network make AI training more efficient and secure?
Our Green Proof of Work (GPOW) network enhances the efficiency and security of AI training by eliminating the need to rerun redundant computations on multiple machines. Unlike our competitors and all the incumbents in the space who replicate the same workload across several computers—resulting in wasted energy, GPU resources, and unsustainable token inflation—we optimize resource utilization by ensuring that computational tasks are not unnecessarily duplicated. This patented proprietary approach conserves energy and hardware resources, allowing us to reward contributors more effectively without excessive token issuance.
From a security standpoint, we employ the latest proven security frameworks at every layer, adhering to Hal Finney’s foundational requirements for PoW. By utilizing modern cryptographic techniques and building our system from the ground up, we achieve maximum flexibility and security. We have drawn inspiration from global advances in electronic warfare to enhance our network’s defenses, protecting both the network and its participants.
By processing all computations and data transactions on-chain, we ensure that every piece of input data is recorded, including the algorithms used. Similarly, all output data is tracked, noting any algorithms that may have modified the results. This comprehensive transparency builds a foundation of trust with users regarding trust and security, as they can fully understand what the data model is doing and what it has been trained on. GPOW is the key that opens the notorious “black box” in artificial intelligence.
- What role does your token economy play in helping people monetize their AI models and data?
Our token economy is designed to incentivize and reward users who contribute data, computing power, and valuable work to the network. Under our PoUW framework, participants are compensated based on the actual computational resources they provide for each block. This eliminates the randomness of traditional PoW “lottery” systems and is more equitable than PoS models that disproportionally reward early token holders regardless of contribution. By directly rewarding users for performing useful work, we create a fair and meriotocratic ecosystem to increase community and enterprise monetization for AI models and data.
- Explainable AI is a big focus for you. How does Immutable Labs make AI models more understandable for users?
At Immutable Labs, we enhance the explainability of AI models by meticulously tracking all aspects of the data lifecycle. We record raw data inputs, the contributors who provided them, and the validators who verified them. We then tie this information to the data models, utilizing explainable AI algorithms like SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations). This approach allows us to transparently illustrate how AI models arrive at their conclusions, effectively answering the question, “Why did you come to this answer?” By making these inner workings accessible, we take significant strides toward demystifying the “black box” nature of AI.
- How are you ensuring compliance for AI data models on your platform?
We ensure compliance by implementing automated governance mechanisms similar to how Bitcoin tracks tokens or Ethereum manages smart contracts, but specifically tailored for data and algorithms. We record all relevant information—including bias detection metrics, personally identifiable information (PII), raw data inputs, and validator details—on an immutable ledger. This transparent and tamper-proof record-keeping facilitates compliance with regulations like GDPR and emerging global AI legislation. By providing a secure and accessible ledger of all data and algorithmic processes, we make it easier for users to demonstrate compliance to regulatory entities, much like how blockchain technology has simplified financial reporting.
- You have a strong focus on community involvement. How can users contribute to your network, and what rewards can they expect?
We highly value community involvement and have structured our network to reward contributors accordingly. Users can participate by providing computing power, contributing data, validating transactions, or developing applications on our platform. In return, they receive tokens reflecting their contributions. Additionally, we collaborate with partners like Movement Labs and Koii Networks to offer incentives that provide users with access to broader ecosystems. These partnerships enhance rewards and open up new opportunities for our community members. - How do your validator networks work, and what benefits do they bring to the AI space?
Our validator networks are essential for achieving full decentralization and play a critical role in the space. Validators are the “heart” of the process, facilitating communications, handling file transfers, conducting audits, and detecting tampering within the network. We use randomly selected validators to collaborate on each transaction or task, incorporating a robust dispute resolution mechanism involving all parties. This ensures work is fairly distributed and consensus is reached on task validity. A staking mechanism requires validators to stake tokens, discouraging malicious behavior by putting their stake at risk.
- What’s next for Immutable Labs? Any exciting features or developments on the horizon?
Looking ahead, we’re laying the groundwork for a decentralized alternative to services like AWS, tailored for databases, on-chain data, edge computing functions, and AI. By decentralizing this concept, we enable developers to deploy and execute functions globally across a network of decentralized nodes. This reduces latency, improves performance, and removes reliance on centralized infrastructure providers. Our focus is on AI applications requiring on-chain data and computation, of which there is extremely high demand. Every week we meet with dozens of companies that need a solution to this issue.
To accelerate development, we plan to offer grants to community members to help build out this ecosystem. This collaborative approach empowers the community to participate actively in shaping the infrastructure.
The prospect of a fully decentralized web service is exciting, as it eliminates centralized control points and fosters a more open infrastructure. While specific details are under wraps, we have some major partnerships that will see our technology integrated into powerful machines that are ubiquitous in our daily lives, expanding our reach across various industries.
Immutable Labs isn’t just addressing the technical challenges of AI — they’re redefining how transparency and trust should operate in the space. With a strong focus on decentralization and upcoming partnerships that will further extend their reach, Immutable Labs is paving the way for a new era where AI and blockchain seamlessly integrate. As they continue to innovate, their work is set to transform industries that rely on AI, making compliance, transparency, and efficiency the new norm.
