COPA and Unified Patents Launch Initiative to Protect Blockchain Developers

Key Points:

  • COPA and Unified Patents iCOPA’s pastntroduce Blockchain Zone to defend developers from patent trolls.
  • The initiative targets non-practicing entities (NPEs) that use patents to pressure companies.
  • Over 300 companies have joined efforts to reduce NPE activity in blockchain.
  • The initiative provides free protection to blockchain developers against baseless legal claims.

COPA and Unified Patents Unveil Blockchain Zone to Combat Patent Trolls

The Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance (COPA) has joined forces with Unified Patents to introduce the Blockchain Zone, an initiative aimed at protecting blockchain developers from the rising threat of patent trolls. These patent trolls, or non-practicing entities (NPEs), hold patents without producing actual products and often exploit the high cost of litigation to pressure companies into costly settlements.

This joint campaign seeks to prevent these entities from stifling blockchain innovation by providing robust defenses for developers against frivolous legal claims. COPA’s commitment to the initiative underscores its ongoing efforts to ensure that blockchain technology remains accessible and free from the hindrance of unnecessary patent litigation.

Defending Blockchain Innovation Against Patent Trolls

Patent trolls remain a significant challenge in the U.S. legal landscape, accounting for 58% of intellectual property cases—a number that has not shifted in the past five years. By creating the Blockchain Zone, COPA joins more than 300 companies that are working to curtail NPE activity and safeguard the blockchain ecosystem from baseless legal attacks.

Steve Lee, a lead member of COPA and Spiral, highlighted the organization’s commitment to protecting the crypto community. He referenced  achievements in challenging false claims, such as those regarding the identity of Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.

“COPA has long focused on lowering barriers to innovation in the crypto space. This new initiative is a critical step in protecting blockchain developers from patent trolls,” said Lee.

Patent litigation can be extremely costly and time-consuming for companies, especially smaller innovators, who may be forced into expensive settlements. By offering strategic defenses through the Blockchain Zone, COPA aims to prevent such outcomes and maintain the steady development of blockchain technologies.

Key Industry Figures Endorse the Initiative

Paul Grewal, Chief Legal Officer at Coinbase and a member of COPA, emphasized the damage patent trolls inflict on the crypto industry, stating, “Patent trolls are obstacles to innovation, slowing the progress of technology and discouraging creativity, particularly in fast-growing fields like cryptocurrency.”

Through the Blockchain Zone, COPA will offer members a pass-through protection service at no cost. This will safeguard smaller companies and developers, many of whom lack the financial resources to combat lengthy legal battles, from unnecessary litigation. The initiative is expected to provide an essential layer of defense for blockchain startups.

Unified Patents: A Proven Track Record in Innovation Protection

Unified Patents brings its successful history of defending innovative technologies to this new partnership with COPA. Known for its Transactions Zone, which protects technologies such as online bill payments and authentication, Unified Patents has successfully challenged hundreds of patent claims in recent years. The Blockchain Zone is expected to offer similar support, ensuring that blockchain technologies can continue to thrive without interference from baseless claims.

Kevin Jakel, founder and CEO of Unified Patents, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We’re excited to join COPA in providing this unique solution to the blockchain community. This collaboration will help ensure that blockchain innovation can grow freely, without the burden of unjust patent claims.”

Notably, COPA and Unified Patents have pledged to never pay NPEs for patent licenses. This policy aims to remove financial incentives that would otherwise encourage NPEs to continue their exploitative activities, helping to create a safer and more open environment for blockchain development.

By launching the Blockchain Zone, COPA and Unified Patents are stepping up efforts to protect blockchain developers from patent trolls, ensuring that the path for blockchain innovation remains clear from unnecessary legal obstacles. The initiative is expected to play a crucial role in allowing smaller companies to continue growing and contributing to the rapidly evolving blockchain industry.
